Past future perfect tense merupakan salah satu bentuk tense Bahasa Inggris yang dipakai untuk mengungkapkan bahwa kenyataan tidak sejalan dengan harapan.
Harapan tersebut digambarkan menggunakan bentuk future namun dalam bingkai waktu abad lampau.
Tense ini sering didapatkan dalam conditional sentence tipe 3, ketika keinginan nyaris mustahil untuk terlaksana.

Pengertian Past Future Perfect Tense
Past future perfect yakni bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menyatakan agresi yang mungkin terjadi atau mustahil terjadi di era depan tetapi dalam bingkai waktu kala lampau.
Past future perfect menggabungkan dua tenses yaitu lampau (past tense) dan kurun depan (future tense).
Oleh sebab itu, lazimnya tense ini menggunakan kata would, should, could dan might untuk menggambarkan pengandaian di kala lalu.
Bentuk kata kerja ini memiliki beberapa fungsi, adalah:
- Membentuk conditional sentence type 3
Contoh: If you had accepted the money, you would have had a better life.
Kalimat tersebut mengungkapkan pengandaian jika seseorang mendapatkan uang, maka hidupnya menjadi lebih baik.
Namun kenyataannya, beliau tidak menerima uang tersebut sehingga kehidupannya tidak menjadi lebih baik.
- Membicarakan sesuatu yang sebaiknya terjadi tetapi justru tidak terjadi
Contoh: You should have registered by now.
Kalimat di atas menggunakan should yang berarti semestinya. Dalam kalimat tersebut, sebaiknya seseorang telah mendaftar, tetapi pada kenyataannya belum.
- Menyatakan bahwa sesuatu sebetulnya mampu dilaksanakan namun tidak dijalankan
Contoh: I could have done the assignment but my brother messed it up.
Kalimat tersebut menunjukkan bahwa bahwasanya dia mampu melaksanakan sesuatu sebab terdapat kata could.
Namun kenyataannya, hal lain terjadi sehingga aksi tersebut tidak dapat dilakukan.
Rumus Past Future Perfect Tense
Untuk menciptakan kalimat past future perfect, diperlukan auxiliary verb seperti would, should, could, atau might kemudian dibarengi oleh have dan kata kerja bentuk ketiga (past participle).
Have berfungsi untuk menawarkan bahwa insiden tersebut sudah selesai di abad lampau. Tidak ada perbedaan untuk subyek jamak maupun tunggal.
Sedangkan untuk past participle, kata kerja yang digunakan menyesuaikan dengan jenisnya yaitu regular atau irregular verb.
Regular verb ialah kata kerja dengan pergantian beraturan sedangkan irregular verb ialah kata kerja dengan perubahan yang tidak konsisten.

Lelaki itu pasti sudah menjadi manajer bila beliau mengikuti peraturan.
- She could have joined the meeting, but she decided to sleep at home.
Dia bantu-membantu bisa ikut pertemuan itu, tetapi dia menentukan untuk tidur di rumah.
- Jonas should have submitted the assignment by now.
Jonas seharusnya telah menyerahkan tugasnya kini.
- If he had worked harder, he would have saved a lot of money.
Jika beliau bekerja lebih keras, ia pasti sudah mengumpulkan banyak duit.

Anak-anak mungkin telah mendengar apa yang kamu katakan.
- Sony could have bought the game console, but he preferred to save his money.
Sony sebenarnya bisa berbelanja konsol game, tetapi beliau menentukan untuk menyimpan uangnya.
- That girl should not have joined us.
Gadis itu semestinya tidak bergabung dengan kita.
- George could not have answered the question, but his friends helped him.
George bantu-membantu tidak mampu menjawab pertanyaan, tetapi sobat-temannya membantunya.
