Pengertian Past Future Tense
Past future merupakan satu di antara 16 bentuk tenses dalam bahasa Inggris. Jenis tense ini menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi atau insiden terjadi di era depan, tetapi obrolan berada dalam bingkai waktu periode lalu. Tense ini kerap digunakan dalam report text.
Simple past future mempunyai berbagai fungsi, antara lain:
- Mengungkapkan suatu aksi yang hendak dilakukan secara sukarela
Contoh: I hope he would be able to join the party.
Kalimat tersebut memakai ‘would’ sebagai bentuk past future, tetapi fungsinya yakni untuk memberikan kerelaan.
- Menunjukkan aksi yang telah direncanakan
Contoh: I thought they were going to go to Singapore.
Dari contoh tersebut, were going to memperlihatkan past future sekaligus sesuatu yang telah dijadwalkan sebelumnya.
- Membuat komitmen
Contoh: He promised that he would never leave me.
Would pada kalimat tersebut berfungsi untuk menyatakan janji yang diungkapkan di masa lampau.
Rumus Past Future Tense
Seperti halnya bentuk simple future tense, past future juga dapat dibuat dengan dua cara.
Pertama, dengan memakai would dan dibarengi oleh bare infinitive.
Sedangkan bentuk kedua memakai be (was/were) going to dan dibarengi oleh infinitive.

Subject + would + verb-1 (bare infinitive)
atau
Subject + was/were + going to + verb-1
- My mother told me that she would buy an ice cream
- My mother told me that she was going to buy an ice cream.
Rumus Past Future Tense Untuk Kalimat Negatif
Subject + would not + verb-1 (bare infinitive)
atau
Subject + was/were + not + going to + verb-1
- Denny said that he would not come to my house.
- Denny said that he was not going to come to my house.
Rumus Past Future Tense Untuk Kalimat Interogatif
Would + subject + verb-1 (bare infinitive)
atau
Was/Were + subject + going to + verb-1

Kalimat aktif dengan bentuk kata kerja simple past future lazimnya mampu diubah menjadi kalimat pasif.
Bagian yang mengalami pergeseran hanyalah bare infinitive, ialah menjadi be + past participle. Sedangkan would dan was/were going to tetap.
